6.2 Magnitude Quake Generated near Atka

No reports of damage was received from the sparsely populated area in the western Aleutians after a 6.2 magnitude struck 58 miles to the east-southeast of the island of Atka at 7:03 am on Monday morning.

The quake struck approximately 10 miles below the seafloor to the south of the Aleutian Chain where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the mantel of the North American Plate.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration”s National Tsunami Warning Center reported shortly after the event that “no tsunami was expected to be generated by this earthquake.”

This latest quake is just the latest in a series of quakes that have been taking place in this highly active region in recent days.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
