The Board of Directors of the Bristol Bay Native Corporation (BBNC) voted to endorse Mark Begich for U.S. Senate during a recent meeting in Anchorage. Senator Begich has demonstrated long-standing support for and advocacy of Native issues in general, including protection of subsistence rights, Native voting rights, Small Business Administration government contracting regulations, and numerous other issues important to Alaskans. In addition, Senator Begich has been the only member of Alaska’s congressional delegation to speak out in opposition to the Pebble Mine and the importance of protecting the Bristol Bay fishery and its world class salmon runs.
“Senator Begich has demonstrated his ability to work across party lines to effectively advocate for and advance issues important to the people of rural Alaska, and we believe his continued representation in Washington D.C. will further support the goals and priorities of the people of Bristol Bay,” stated BBNC Board Chairman Joseph Chythlook. Jason Metrokin, BBNC president and chief executive officer, added, “We are looking forward to working with Senator Begich as he continues his work and support for all Alaskans.”
The primary election is set for August 19, where one of three republican candidates will emerge as Senator Begich’s challenger in the November 4 general election.
