Bus Ends up in Ditch after Driver Passes out, Dies at the Wheel on Sterling Highway

Alaska State Troopers, Kenai Peninsula team responded to a passenger bus crash near mile 90 of the Sterling Highway early Sunday morning at 6:47 am. When they arrived at the scene the bus was in the ditch.

There were about 20 people aboard the bus when the bus driver fell unconscious while driving the bus northbound on the highway. When the driver lost consciousness,  the bus left the road and came to rest in the ditch.

Some of the passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash and were treated at the Central Peninsula Hospital.

The driver of the bus never regained consciousness and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

It was determined that the driver died from natural causes. The investigation is continuing.

The remains of the driver were released to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage.

Next of kin were notified of the incident.
