A Sitka man, identified as 40-year-old Jesse Mills, has been the subject of an urgent search since Thursday morning after he disappeared from his home on Wednesday night. He was reported missing during the early morning hours on Thursday.

Mill’s wife called in to the U.S. Coast Guard District Command Center to report his absence and told the USCG that she believes that he may have gone kayaking as his kayak is also gone from the residence.

Following her report, Coast Guard Sector Juneau took control of the missing person’s case and a search for Mills was initiated. The Coast Guard Cutter Liberty and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter were launched from Sitka to begin the search.

The Sitka Fire Department Search and Rescue and Dive Team responded and also assisted in the search,as did the Sitka Police Department and Good Samaritans.

The search for Mills was carried out throughout the day and continued through the night with negative results.

According to the report, Mills, who is 6-foot-two and weighs 180 lbs, was last seen wearing black Carhartt pants and a black hoodie. His kayak is described as a single-seater model that is lime-green and white in color.

“The Coast Guard and Sitka Police and Fire personnel are working diligently to find this man,” said Lt. Jennifer Ferreira, a Sector Juneau command duty officer. “We appreciate the assistance of the good Samaritans in our search efforts.”

Troopers are asking the public to call 907-225-5118 if they see Mills or a kayak matching that description.
