There was no damage reported in the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck 50 miles to the west of Gustavus at 2:54 am on Friday morning, but it did shake awake many of Juneau’s residents 98 miles away.

The quake that lasted about 20 seconds rattled dishes and other household belongings and caused hanging light fixtures to sway.

The quake that was originally registered at 6.1 was later downgraded to a 5.9 and was the largest of the series of quakes to strike the area this morning. Aftershocks are expected throughout the day.

The earthquake originated at a depth of six miles.
