A father and son teamed up to apprehend a man suspected of stealing the son’s truck on Holt Road in Fairbanks on Monday afternoon.

According to statements, the son, who was woring in his dad’s shop Monday afternoon, was alerted when he heard his vehicle start up and begin driving away. The car theft victim gave chase on foot and caught up to his pickup truck and jumped into the bed as the vehicle was driving off.

As the vehicle turned on to Van Horn Road, after pounding on the truck’s rear window and yelling at the man driving off with his truck, the victim picked up a section of a bed frame and smashed in the window. After hitting the driver, the driver attempted to flee the vehicle. Reaching in, the theft victim put the vehicle into park and repeatedly struck the driver as he attempted to flee.

The son’s father arrived at the scene, driving a snow plow truck, as the alleged car thief was trying to flee the scene and dropped his plow blade as the man was running past his truck. He hit the man with the blade then exited his truck and subdued the suspected thief.

An ambulance was called to aid the suspected car thief, and he was receiving aid when police arrived at the scene at approximately 5:30 pm. During the investigation, witnesses were interviewed and the witness’s statements agreed with the father and son’s statements.

Further investigation found that the alleged car thief had dropped his vehicle off at a nearby glass shop shortly before attempting to abscond with the pickup truck.
