Savoonga Man Dies from Hypothermia Traveling on Saint Lawrence Island

A missing person report was made from Savoonga to Alaska State Troopers based in Nome at 5:40 pm on September 14th, reporting that Savoonga man, 56-year-old Harlan Kingeekuk, was four days overdue from arriving back to the community.

Harlan had gone out to a digging site by himself days before on the east side of Saint Lawrence Island and had not returned.

Local volunteers from the community set out to search for the missing man, and that day had discovered Harlan’s four-wheeler stuck along the trail, bgut no sign of Harlan.

The next day, Thursday, as the U.S. Coast Guard was responding to assist in the search, ground searchers located the remains of Harlan at 5:45 pm.

According to the report, it appeared that Harlan had fell victim to hypothermia. His remains are being transported to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsy.
