Venetie woman, Sonja Yatlin, age 33, went before Superior Court Michael McDonald on Monday for a sentencing hearing and was served up a sentence of over five years in prison for hitting 92-year-old Yolanda Rockar then driving away.
In the May 2011 incident, Yatlin struck Rockar with her vehicle, then backed up and drove away from the scene without rendering aid to the woman.
Rockar, a retired school teacher, suffered a broken arm, broken leg, broken ribs and a broken pelvis in the accident. Rockar would die nine days later at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Doctors say that her injuries hastened her demise.
Yatlin was driving on a suspended license when the accident occured. She was also on probation for reckless driving at the time.
Earlier this year, Yatlin entered a plea of Leaving the Scene of an Accident with out Providing Aid to the Injured in a plea deal with the prosecutors.

While Yatlin could have been sentenced to ten years for the offense, she could have gotten off with no jail time as well. But, the judge in the case stated that she was driving with a suspended license, saying “This was not an accident, this was only a matter of time before something like this happened. This was a reckless indifference to her status and to the danger she provided to the public.”
Yatlin, during her time since the accident has also been convicted of an unrelated drug possession charge which she received and additional 14 months for.
