60-year-old Joseph Keenan May had taken the name of his long-dead brother, who died in his teens in Pennsylvania, to apply for an Alaska Driver’s license in 2009 and for filing for unemployment benefits in 2013.
May fled Florida, where he was employed as a Deputy sheriff in Manatee County, Florida after he became a wanted man on charges of Capital Sexual Battery in 1991 for the sexual abuse of a 66-year-old girl in the 70s. In 1993, a federal warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He faces a possible death sentence for his charges in Florida.

It was the joint efforts of the Social Security Administration’s office of Inspector General and the FBI-Anchorage Division that were responsible for the apprehension of May in Alaska, as well as efforts of the FBI-Tampa Division, the U.S. Attorneys Office and State Attorney’s office in Florida as well as the Manatee County Sheriff’s office that led to the arrest.
