APD Arrests 2018 New Years Homicide Suspect Quennel Avery

14 months after the fatal shooting took the life of 39-year-old Timothy Smith in the 4th Avenue/D Street area just minutes after midnight on New Years Day, 2018, APD reports that they have made an arrest in the case.

APD reports that detectives, last month received a tip prompting them to aggressively follow up the lead after over a year of seeking help from the public in locating the suspect vehicle, a Chevy Trailblazer.

That tip led to more leads and acquiring more information and ultimately revealed the identity of 34-year-old Quennel Avery, who detectives say was both the driver and shooter.

According to the investigation, the victim may not have been the intended target and that he was shot after sliding across the hood of the Trailblazer as Avery was in an active altercation with other persons at the scene. That was when Avery got out of the driver’s side of the vehicle and discharged his handgun, striking Smith. Smith was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Avery, who was arrested Friday afternoon, now faces charges of Murder I and II.

He was remanded to the Anchorage Jail pending arraignment.
