After over 14 hours of deliberations over a period of three days, the 12-person federal jury, comprised of seven women and five men, has determined that Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev should be put to death for his part in the 2013 bombing in that city.

Tsarnaev showed no emotion, sitting with his head slightly lowered as the jury announced their decision.

It will undoubtedly be months before he is formally sentenced by the judge. After sentencing, Tsarnaev’s attorneys will file many appeals that will take years as Tsarnaev aawaits his fate by lethal injection..

It was April 15th, 2013 that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, and his brother Tamerlan, set off two pressure cooker bombs, that took the lives of three and injured another 264, on Boston’s Boylston Street near the finish line of the race.

By April 18th, two suspects were identified, and later that evening, the brothers would be involved in a firefight where an MIT policeman was shot and killed. During the gunfight, Tamerlan was shot several times. During his getaway, Tsarnaev would run him over as he made his getaway in a hi-jacked vehicle. Tamerlan died at the scene.

April 19th, the manhunt for the remaining one of the two Chechan brothers ensued with thousands of officers searched Waterown. That evening, a homeowner discovered Tsarnaev in a boat the man had stored in his back yard.

During his hospitalization immediately after his capture, Tsarnaev alleged that his brother was the mastermind of the bombing. He also stated that after the Boston bombing, they were going to travel to New York, where they planned to bomb Times Square.

The two brothers were motivated to carry out the bombings because of extremist Islamic beliefs, and the involvement of the U.S. in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. They learned to build their pressure cooker bombs using an al-Qaeda publication that they accessed online.
