Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell has joined the list of contenders that have revealed which seat in State Government they will vie for in the next election cycle.

Treadwell announced on Tuesday that he will step up and run for the U.S. Senate seat that opens up again in 2014. That seat is currently filled by Democratic Senator Mark Begich.

But, before he goes head to head with Begich, Treadwell must first run against Joe Miller, former contender for Senator Murkowski’s seat which he fought for and lost to the write-in candidate in the general election in 2010. Alaska’s Natural Resources Commissioner, the other Dan Sullivan is also eyeing the Senate seat.

Alaska’s Governor Sean Parnell decided that he would remain in the running for the Governorship of Alaska and has ruled out a run for the Senate in 2014, opening up the field for his second in command.

State Sentaor Lesil McGuire has stated her intentions to vie for the Lt Governor’s seat being vacated by Treadwell.

The Mayor of Alaska’s largest city, Mayor Dan Sullivan threw his name into the hat for a state seat and is the last remaining contendor that hasn’t specified which race he will run in.

“Alaskans are very concerned about what is, or is not, happening in Washington, D.C. So am I,” said Treadwell, when announcing his decision in Fairbanks. “This intense exploratory effort has convinced me that I have the support necessary to build a winning campaign.”
