MEXICO CITY-Mexican authorities announced the capture of Jesus Rejon Aguilar, one of the original founders of the notorious Zeta drug cartel. He was captured just one hour northwest of Mexico City.

Jesus Aguilar, or “El Mamito,” was one of a small group of Mexican Army Special Forces deserters that formed the Zetas in 1999, originally a paramilitary enforcement group that ran protection for the Gulf drug cartel. The gang now includes corrupt former federal, state, and local police officers as well as many members of Guatemala’s special forces. The Zetas broke from the Gulf cartel last year and have waged a very bloody battle with that group over control of the northeastern corridor into Texas ever since. That corridor is used to transport drugs, people, weapons and other contraband in and out of the state of Texas.

The savage Zeta gang has long been associated with the kid-napping and slayings of numerous central american immigrants in and around the border states next to the U.S. border in Texas. They also are wanted for a breakout attempt of a former Gulf cartel chief who has since been extriddited and imprisoned in the U.S. The Zetas, and particularly”El Mamito” is wanted for the ambush death of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jaime Zapata, who was killed on February 15th in San Luis Potosi. A second agent was wounded in that incident.

This now leaves only one of the original gang members still at large. But, even with the capture of Heriberto Lazcano, it will not bring an end to the Zetas, they have multiplied many times since their beginnings, but it will deal them a blow as Lazcano is the current leader of the group.

“El Mamito” was captured without a shot being fired.
