A South Carolina woman was released from custody after three hours after being booked into jail on one felony count of filing a false police report, Spartanburg police say.

29-year-old Heather Freeman of Spartanburg, South Carolina called in to police in Spartanburg and reported that she had been assaulted and stabbed by a middle-aged Hispanic male on Valentines Day.

She reported to police that her doorbell rang, and when she answered her door, the Hispanic male forced his way in and held a knife to her throat, then sexually assaulted her. Afterwards, Freeman told offficers, the man stabbed her in the vagina.

The report prompted numerous police to canvas  the streets looking for the suspect in the stabbing. Freeman, who had blood on her face, neck and groin, was admitted to the hospital.

A search warrant was issued to obtain evidence of the crime at the woman’s residence, and Freeman was interviewed further at the hospital by two investigators. During that interview, Freeman would change her story and say that her assailant was not Hispanic, but rather was a black male named Phil, who was a friend of hers.

The investigators continued to question Freeman, who would eventually admit that she had made the story up. She told police that no one, had in fact, sexually assaulted her and that she had stabbed herself.

Freeman was released three hours after her arrest on Felony False Police Report charges.
