ADOT&PF Closes Whittier Tunnel Due to Winds

In a press release, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) announced the closure of the Whittier Tunnel due to high winds in the area.

ADOT$PF said that North America’s longest combined vehicle-railroad tunnel will remain closed until the high winds subside. Hi winds of up to 75 miles per hour are forecast in the area..

Th Whittier Tunnel, also known as the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, travels under Maynard Mountain, and is the only access to Whittier in Prince William Sound by land vehicle. The 2.5 mile tunnel allows alternating one-way access daily to one of the state’s popular ports of call for cruise ships.
