The young girl, Oksana Makar, who was gang-raped two weeks ago by three men in the southern Ukraine, died today in a hospital in Mykolayiv.
Her rape set off protests across the country. Outraged Ukrainians marched against the corruption and favoritism of the wealthy elite of the country. Ukrainians were outraged at the official corruption perceived as police released two of the three suspects in the incident. The two had powerful connections in the region.
Their release caused widespread demonstrations throughout the country. The protests prompted police to re-arrest the two men. A leaked video of the interrogation played on the Internet sparked the protests. This is how the Kyiv Post described that video:
…(T)he suspect, apparently Krasnoschek, describes calmly how he raped and then choked the woman first with his hands and then with a cable. He claims he didn’t set the woman on fire after the three men – thinking she was dead – took her body to an abandoned building nearby.
He says he was only trying to burn a pillowcase they had accidentally taken with them. According to the video, after disposing of Makar, the three suspects went to the supermarket to buy more vodka and, after that, stopped at a street kiosk for tea.
A passer-by found Makar the next morning and took her to a hospital.
While at the hospital doctors had to amputate her feet and one arm in an attempt to save her from the gangrene that had begun nsetting in. Makar also had damaged lungs that were bleeding.
Police say the rape took place in the apartment of one of the rapists on March 9th. After the grisly rape, she was set afire and dumped at an abandoned construction site.
In a short video, taken by Makar’s mother, Makar says she wants her rapists castrated and imprisoned.
All three men have now been charged with her murder as well as the rape.
