28 people in the United States have been confirmed dead as a result of the massive storm that battered the eastern seaboard.
The news of the death toll comes as President Obama has pledged to deliver additional resources to hard-hit areas that were in the storm’s path.
Obama has declared “major disasters in the state of New York and New Jersey. The storm there caused considerable structural damage to a multitude of buildings, caused power outages and flooding of low-lying areas. The Manhattan waterfront, the Lower East Side, the West Side to Hudson Street, Brooklyn, Dumbo, Red Hook, and Queens were underwater as water surged in from the storm. Floodwaters alos surged into ground Zero, causing waterfalls over the construction area.
The storm, no longer designated as a hurricane made landfall south of New York, closing subway tunnels and causing wind-driven house fires and power outages. Over three-quarters of a million people lost power during the storm, over a quarter of a million people lost power in Manhattan alone when an explosion took place at a substation on East 14th street. The storm that ravaged New York also caused a second day of no trading at the New York Stock Exchange.
Overall, over 6 million people lost power through 17 states in the Northeast.

A nuclear power plant in New Jersey that was down for maintenance declared an alert after water levels reached the high water mark for the plant.
The governor of New Jersey, normally very critical of President Obama praised the president federal emergency officials for the job they had done during and after the storm. Damage along the Jersey shore was extensive. It is estimated that the economic damage from the eastern seaboard’s superstorm will reach over $20 Billion.
