A 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook south California at 6.25 am PDT. The quake was centered in the San Fernando Valley and occurred six miles from Beverly Hills, seven miles from Century City and seven miles from Santa Monica at a depth of five miles.
The mild shaker today shook furniture, knocked down flower pots and dishes, and caused ripples in the area’s swimming pools, but otherwise caused no damages or reported injuries. It is the most significant earthquake to strike southern California since the 5.5 magnitude Chino Hills quake in 2008.
The region where the quake struck is not known for it earthquakes and has not been siesmically active recently.
Authorities asked the public to not call in the report of the earthquake to 911, saying that they were “aware of it,” and pointed out that the llines needed to be kept open for emergencies.
Scores of celebrities in the area quickly tweeted news of the quake on Twitter, informing their fans of the shaker. News anchors on the morning shows were visibly shaken by the event. KTLA’s Anchor Chris Schauble showed visible shock as he dove under the desk while on the air, his co-anchor Megan Henderson quickly followed suit.
Multiple smaller aftershocks continue to shudder the area. U.S Geological Survey seismologist states that the quake has the potential to be a foreshock and could be followed by quakes equal or larger to this one in the next several hours. He said the possibility of that happening are roughly 5%.
