The US has at least two more millionaires today after the numbers 8-14-17-20-39 and the Mega number 7 added up to two winners, one in San Jose and the other in Atlanta. The odds of winning the lottery in last night's drawing were approximately 259 million to 1.
The winners, on both coasts, have yet to come forward to collect their winning portion of the $636 million that has been building since its start on October 4th. If the winners agree to have the winnings doled out to them in payments over 30 years, they will take in $318 million before taxes. If they chooose to take a lump payment, they will take home $170 million before taxes. Because of a last minute surge in ticket buying the jackpot total may be higher, that won’t be known until later Wednesday.
Last night’s winning numbers, which are drawn at the ABC affiliate studios in Atlanta’s WSB-TV, produced the second largest jackpot in the lottery’s history. The largest jackpot of $656 million was split three ways after the winning numbers were drawn on March 30th , 2012. The largest lottery prize was won by a lone winner on March 25th, 2011, that payout was an annuity of $319 million. The annuity payout on last night’s winning numbers falls one million dollars short at $318 million.
The two locations that the winning tickets were bought was a Gateway Newstand at a high-rise office complex in Atlanta, owned by Young Soolee, and Jennifer’s Gift Shop in San Jose, California owned by Thuy Nguyen. Each will receive $1 million for selling the winning tickets.
43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands sell tickets to the Mega Millions. Six states currently do not operate a lottery, those states either have a law against the selling of lottery tickets or a ban on operating the lottery by Constitutional mandate. Those states are Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada and Utah. Wyoming is the newest state to join the lottery and did so in March of this year. It did not participate in the current lottery however.
