A late night canoe ride ended in tragedy on Tuesday night on Lake Lucille in Wasilla.

An investigation into the tragic accident that occurred on the lake after two people went out on a ride found that 24-year-old Michael Sexton and 20-year-old Arielle Housman went out on the lake late on Tuesday night and at some point overturned and the canoe partially submerged.

According to the Wasilla Police Department, in an interview with Sexton, he revealed that because he could not swim, his partner, Housman attempted to swim to shore to get help as he clung to the canoe out on the lake.

Housman would not make it to shore however and succumbed to the cold temperatures of the lake.

According to the report, a neighbor living on the lake heard yells coming from the lake late last night. That person got into a boat and was able to successfully locate Sexton out on the lake, retrieved him from the icy water and transported him to shore. Further search by the good Samaritan boater did not turn up Housman however.

By early Wednesday morning, investigators were on the scene and actively searching for the missing Housman. Vessels as well as divers were deployed in the search, yet it would be much later that Housman would be found submerged in the lake. When found, Housman was alive but unconscious. CPR was performed and Housman was taken to the Mat-Su Regional Hospital. But, once there, she was pronounced deceased.

Sexton is recovering at the hospital and is expected to recover fully.
