Officials in Texas expect the Ellis dam 25 miles to the southwest of Dallas to fail sometime on Wednesday and are alerting residents and farmers to move themselves to higher ground. There is no mandatory evacuation order at this time.
According to reports, the earthen dam at Padora Lake in Midlothian is eroding away and threatening to inundate Highway 287 in several feet of water. The dam reached capacity and began overflowing following the heavy Memorial Weekend storm that caused widespread flooding in Texas and Mexico. U.S. deaths from that deadly storm has reached 17, while 14 more have been reported killed in Mexico.
Workers continue to pump water from the lake in order to relieve the pressure on the dam.
Texas officials say that the collapse of the dam is not expected to be overly dangerous, but if the dam gives way, about 25 homes will be affected. Officials are at the ready to close down the highway if the dam gives way.
