According to the Jupiter, Florida Police Department, Presidential contender, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, 42-year-old Corey Lewandowski, turned himself into the police department after he was charged with misdemeanor battery in a March 8th incident at Trump’s National Golf Club.
According to the report, Lewandowski forcefully grabbed then Breitbart News Network reporter, Michelle Fields by the arm as she queried an affirmative action question at Trump at the news conference there following his win in the Florida primaries.
The action was observed by Washington Post reporter, Ben Terris, who would later report on the incident and say that as Trump was leaving the ballroom, Fields pressed forwardd to ask Trump a question and was grabbed forcefully by her arm and was yanked out of the way, leaving finger-shaped bruises on her arm.
Lewandowski and Trump denied that Lewandowski ever touched Fields and the campaign manager called Fields “totally delusional,” while Trump said, “Look at the tapes-nothing there!”
Two days later, on Thursday afternoon, Trump campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks issued a statement denying that the incident had ever occurred, saying,
“The accusation, which has only been made in the media and never addressed directly with the campaign, is entirely false. As one of the dozens of individuals present as Mr. Trump exited the press conference I did not witness any encounter. In addition to our staff, which had no knowledge of said situation, not a single camera or reporter of more than 100 in attendance captured the alleged incident.”
But, the incident was captured on video, it was captured on one of Trump’s Golf Club security cameras. It was this footage that Jupiter police would review then decide that it corroborated Field’s accounting of the incident in her complaint.
Fields would leave the Breitbart News Network less than a week later. Her reason for leaving was because Breitbart, who is seen as a big supporter of Trump, would not stand behind her. Following Field’s resignation, Ben Shapiro, Breitbart’s editor-at-large, also resigned. Several other employees of the online news network would also leave the publication for the same reason, it was reported.
In a tweet today, Trump said “Victory press conference was over. Why is she allowed to grab me and shout questions? Can I press charges? In a following tweet, he posted an image showing Fields touching him.
Jupiter police say that Lewandowski was released after agreeing to appear before the Palm Beach County Circuit Court on May 4th to answer the charges.
