KODIAK, Alaska – Valdez-based Coast Guardsmen are responding to the sinking of the 56-foot purse seine fishing vessel Lively Jane in Anderson Bay six miles southwest of Valdez Wednesday.

The crew of the 45-foot good Samaritan vessel Alioth made a call out at about 8 a.m. on VHF-FM Channel 16 reporting the Lively Jane struck a submerged rock with five crewmembers aboard and that the crewmembers safely boarded their skiff before the Lively Jane sank.

Coast Guard Station Valdez personnel responded to the call and sent two 25-foot Response Boat-Small crews to the area. Once on scene, the Station Valdez response crews reported the Lively Jane crew was in good condition and stood by to respond further if needed. The Lively Jane crew and skiff were taken to Valdez by the RB-S response crews.

The owner reports the Lively Jane’s fuel capacity is 800 gallons, but approximately 75 gallons of diesel fuel and 25 gallons of lube oil are currently on board. No pollution has been sighted. Alaska Marine Resources has been hired by the Lively Jane’s owner to conduct salvage operations and any pollution response.

Weather at the time of the incident was reportedly clear skies and minimal winds. Marine Safety Unit Valdez personnel will monitor the situation and investigate the cause of the sinking.
