The Coast Guard Cutter Healy arrived safely to its port in Seattle on Sunday, after more than 250 days at sea.
Prior to her arrival in Seattle, the Cutter Healy was dispatched to one more mission to aid a vessel 520 miles Northwest of Puget Sound.
On Friday, a Singapore flagged freighter, the Dry Beam reported they were in distress. They said they had become unstable and had lost a partial load of timber in 70 knot winds and high seas.
The Healy, was 90 miles away, making way to the port of Seattle. She diverted to assist. Prior to her arrival to the scene, the freighter reported that she had been able to stablize their ballast tanks and was now underway to teir destination in Victoria, Canada.
The Healy arrived at the scene and began an escort for the ship. She was soon relieved by the John P Tully, of the Canadian Coast Guard. The Healy then continued on to Seattle.
Rear Admiral Christopher Colvin, the Deputy Commander of Coast Guard Pacific Area, had this to say for the Healy, “From marine research in the Arctic, to breaking 800 miles of ice to get fuel to Nome, Alaska, to search and rescue in 30-foot seas, the crew superbly displayed the multi-mission capability of the Coast Guard Cutter Healy,” He continued, “We ask a lot of our crews, and their families, and they all demonstrate excellence. This is our way.”
