Two men implicated in the late Tuesday night death of 55-year-old Jonathan Adams were in court on Thursday to enter a plea to charges of First Degree Murder.
Leonardo Bongolto, age 34, and Denison Soria, age 40, allegedly beat Adams to death outside of the Planet Dutch bunkhouse. The incident was witnessed by a woman passing by in her vehicle. She stated to police that she saw two men standing over a third man who was lying on the steps face-down.
Unalaska officewrs arived at the scene to find Adams lying on the steps, officers quickly realized that Adams had suffered serious injuries to his neck and head. It was apparent by his position, as his head was unnaturally bent under his body. After stabilizing Adams, the officers rolled him over. Adams gave one gasp and his pulse was lost. Officers and EMS began CPR, but were unsuccessful. Adams was transported to the local clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
During questioning, the female witness told officers that she had seen all three men fighting before Adams struck the man later identified as Bongolto. The men retaliated by hitting Adams repeatedly in the face and thrust him into a corner where they continued to hit Adams in the face. Adams fell ppartially down the stairs, where he was pursued by Bongolto, who began kicking him in the ribs. This caused Adams to continue to tumble down the stairs. Bongolto kicked Adams one more time causing him to tumble the full extent to the bottom. It was then that both men took off in two different directions.
After the men left, the female witness went to try and assist Adams. When she got to him she could hear him gasping and gurgling. She saw he was severly injured and so did not attempt to move him.
The attack on Adams had its roots in the day before when Adams and Soria had gotten into an altercation. According to Bongolto, Soria was still sore about it the next day on Tuesday. Bongolto said to officers that Soria shook a beer and sprayed the beer over Adams as he slept. The liquid woke Adams who began fighting with Soria anew.
Bongolto said that he had tried to break up the fight when Adams struck him. That was when the fight moved outside. Once outside, Bongolto told police Adams struck him again, this time on the back of his head. Bongolto said the hit caused him pain and served to infuriate him. Both men fought with Adams, knocking him to the ground. He admitted kicking Adams in the back and legs and also admitted to kicking Adams accidently in the head. After seeing that Adams wass not moving, Bongolto said he went to assist him but a woman who had stopped nearby and witnessed the fight said not to move him. At that point, Bongolto said that he left and returned to his room.
Soria attempted to tell the judge what had happened, before he was cut short and reminded him of his right to remain silent. Bail was set at $250,000 each and both men were appointed public defenders.
When told his bail amount, Soria told the judge, “I don’t have that kind of money ma’am.” The judge then explained the penalties for First Degree Murder to the two men.
Bongolto and Soria are due back in court on March 10th, the day set for the pre-indictment hearing.
