While commending the Alaska Redistricting board for their work and their weighing of constitutional and statutory provisions, the Alaska Supreme Court ordered the state to re-draw the districts adhering to a stricter interpretation of the Alaska Constitution.
As the Court made its decision, it cited Hickel v. Southeast Conference, saying that even though the Voting Rights Act takes precedence over the Alaska Constitution, that the “Voting Rights Act need not be elevated in stature so that the requirements of the Alaska Constitution are unnecessarily compromised.”
