Romney's own senior campaign adviser dealt a blow to the Romney campaign on CNN when he made a comment about Romney's possible future stance on issues in the upcoming General Elections.
Senior Campaign Adviser Eric Fehrnstrom told CNN that the Romney campaign would hit the re-set button if and when Romney gains the Republican nod later this year. In response to a question asking if the campaign would have to adopt conservative stances that may hurt Romney’s standing with moderates, he said, “it’s almost like an Etch A Sketch — you can kind of shake it up, and we start all over again.”
The response from his competitors for the GOP prsidential nomination was swift.
Gingrich told CNN, “You could not have found a more perfect illustration of why people distrust Romney than to have his [adviser] say that the Etch A Sketch allows you to erase everything in the general election, you have to read the guy’s quote to realize — if he had set out to highlight for everybody why we distrust Romney, I think he couldn’t have done a better job.” A new website put up by Gingrich campaign features an Etch-a-Sketch with “Mitt’s Etch-a-Sketch Principles” written on the toy.
Santorum didn’t waste any time capitalizing on the Romney camp gaffe either. In an appearance in Texas today, Santorum told listeners, as he waved around an Etch-a-Sketch, that the toy represents Mitt Romney’s lack of Conservative convictions. He said, “If we are going to be a little different, we may as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk in what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future.”
An aide to the Santorum campaign was also seen at a Maryland rally handing out Etch-a-Sketches to Romney supporters there.
At a rally outside of Mandeville, Louisiana, Santorum, while shaking an Etch-a-Sketch, told rally-goers there, “You are not looking at someone who is the Etch A Sketch candidate.”
Louisiana polls open day after tommorow for the GOP primary there.
