Navy F-18 crashed into a low-rise apartment complex in the heavily built up urban area of Virginia Beach this afternoon.
The aircraft was a F/A-18D assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 106 from Naval Air Station Oceana. According to a Navy news release, the fighter crashed shortly after take-off at 12:05 pm. That base is a training facility for Navy and Marine Corps replacement pilots and weapon systems officers to support fleet commitments.
Jet fuel from the aircraft fueled the flames, setting two buildings ablaze and damaging three others. Prior to the crash, the two aviators ejected and are uninjured. They stayed with the jet until the last possible moment before ejecting. They have been taken to a local hospital for observation.
It is reported that the crash had no fatalities on the ground as well, although several people are being treated for smoke inhalation.
