In Haines, Alaska, State Troopers assisted in apprehending a Utah suspect in a 20 year-old cold case involving the rape and aggravated murder of an elderly Ogden, Utah woman on Wednesday.
According to the Alaska State Trooper dispatch, 40-year-old Stephen Ellenwood fled the troopers after they made contact with him at his residence on Wednesday afternoon. He was taken into custody after attempting to evade enforcement by running away into the woods near his Allen Road residence.

The case had its beginnings during the early morning hours of May 3rd, 1993 in Ogden, Utah. It was there that Ellenwood is alleged to have raped and beaten a 92-year-old woman,Grace Mae Odie, at a retirement home. He was caught by an employee at the home after that employee heard unusual noises coming from the room and went to investigate. When observed by the employee, Ellenwood was in the process of getting dressed. He fled the scene wearing only Levis.
Odie would succumb to the injuries she sustained in the attack six days later at McKay-Dee medical Center. She had suffered injuries to her head, chest and extremities according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
Three hours later and two blocks away, another sexual assault occurred. That victim was walking to a bus-stop when she was sexually molested, stabbed and had her purse stolen. The description of the assailant in that case fit the description given by the retirement home employee.
Hair samples in the clothing left behind by Ellenwood and partial fingerprints at the scene provided Ogden police with essential evidence in the cold case. On April 26th, an arrest warrant for the aggravated murder charge was filed in Utah’s Second District Court. Those documents were put under seal so as not to alert Ellenwood of the actions taken by authorities.
Although Ellenwood is suspected in the second assault, no charges in that case have been filed as yet.
Ellenwood moved to the Alaskan community of Haines in mid-2012.
The Odie murder case can carry the death penalty in the state of Utah, but prosecutors must declare their intent to pursue that punishment within 60 days of Ellenwood’s arraignment.
There is no word as to when Ellenwood will be extradited back to Utah.
