The Republican-controlled House passed a late-term abortion bill on Tuesday on a vote of 228-196.

The bill would restrict abortion rights and ban abortions after 22 weeks.

The bill passed on general party lines, although 6 Democrats voted along with the Republicans on the bill. Those Democrat Representatives were, Nick Rahall of West Virginia, Collin Peterson of Minnesota, Mike McIntyre of North Carolina, Jim Matheson of Utah, Dan Lipinski of Illinois, and Henry Cuellar of Texas.

Although six Democrats voted for the Republican led bill, six Republicans voted along with Democrats in opposing it. Those Republican Representatives were Rob Woodall of Georgia, Jon Runyan of New Jersey, Rodney Frelinghuysen of New Jersey, Richard Hanna of New York, Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, and Paul Broun of Georgia.

Even though the bill passed with a wide margin in the House, the bill will stop there and advance no further. The bill will not even be taken up by the Democratically-controlled Senate and if it even passed there, President Obama has already threatened to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.

The House bent to the demands of anti-abortion lawmakers in the House and brought up the bill. The passage of the bill in the House was welcomed by socially conservative members of the Republican party but is sure to further alienate the young, female, and independant voters that the party is attempting to woo.
