A confession was posted to YouTube this week by an Ohio man who video-taped a confession and admitted to killing Vincent Canzani in a DUI-related auto accident in June of this year.
22-year-old Matthew Cordie, who was found injured at the scene during the early morning hours in June and was considered a suspect in the case but was never charged. When taken to the hospital, Cordie was tested for alcohol and tested positive.
Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said that he saw the video and downloaded it as evidence in the accident case. O’Brien says that he will now ask a Grand Jury to indict Cordie on charges of aggravated Vehicular Homicide with an Alcohol Specification. That charge carries a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.
In the video, Cordie stated, “My name is Matthew Cordle, and on June 22nd, 2013, I hit and killed Vincent Canzani. This video will act as my confession.”
He admitted to trying to drive home that night after drinking heavily and driving the wrong way down Interstate 670 near Columbus, Ohio. It was then that Cordie’s Toyota Tundra hit 61-year-old Canzani, a retired Navy veteran who was driving a jeep.
Cordie said that even though he had talked to lawyers about the case and they assured him that they could have the blood test thrown out as evidence, that he decided to come clean about the incident. “I won’t dishonor Victor’s memory by lying about what happened,” Cordie stated, “By releasing this video, I know exactly what it means. I’m handing the prosecution everything they need to put me away for a very long time.” He told his viewers that he intends to plead guilty to the charges.
Cordie’s attorney, George Breitmayer said on WBNS that “The video he released is a testament to both his integrity and his character, and I know that he intends to fully cooperate throughout the tenancy of all these proceedings.” Breitmayer said that he was not aware that the video was to be released by his client.
The video ends with Cordie pleading with others not to drive and drive.
