Roswell Police and rescue vehicles rushed to the Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico as school was beginning for the day in response to shots fired at the facility for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
Police are reporting that a student opened fire on a 14-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl at the school this morning. The boy was struck twice in the face and the girl was shot in the arm. Both students were rushed to a Roswell hospital then further medevaced to Lubbock, Texas for further treatment. The boy, who has since gone into surgery, is still listed in critical condition. The young girl’s condition is listed as serious.
It was just as school was beginning this morning, that the shooter rushed into the gym, pulled a gun from his band instrument bag, aimed, then shot the two students. The shooter then pointed the weapon into the air and fired off another round before dropping the weapon. He was immediately apprehended by an instructor at the school.
The young boy who was shot in the face told authorities that he was the intended target of the shooter, although no information as to why he thought that is presently available.
The school was placed on lockdown and the students from the school were bussed to a nearby mall to be retrieved by their parents.
The New Mexico State Police have taken over the investigation of the incident.
A farming and ranching community of 50,000, Roswell is best known for the supposed UFO crash that took place there in 1947.
