The Division of Environmental Health and Engineering is now providing clean water and sanitation to Kwethluk.
Kwethluk is a Yupik village, with the unique distinction of being at once a village and a city with 150 households.
It is located just 12 air miles east of Bethel in Western Alaska on the Kwethluk River, a tributary to the Lower Kuskokwim.
Providing basic water and sewer service to the roughly 150 homes is the culmination of over 15 years of effort by the Kwethluk community leaders. Acting through a cooperative agreement between the city, the village, and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
This undertaking began with extensive design-work resulting in:
-water source development,
-water and sewer treatment facilities,
-water storage tank,
-waste collection system
-and underground piped water delivery,
Through this project, many homes were provided with basic indoor plumbing and accompanying fixtures.
Many agency’s cooperated in funding the work through individually funded projects.
