After receiving daily calls reporting people snagging salmon at the Channel Wayside Fishing dock next to the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery in Juneau, Wildlife Troopers set up a surveillance operation to catch the violators.
The operation to observe and charge the offenders using weighted trble hooks took place over the weekend. Snagging is prohibited within 150 feet of the dock.

One of the offenders was a 17-year-old juvenile who was cited for retaining 4 snagged salmon. His fishing pole, gaff,coler, knife and fishing pole were seized and he was issued a citation for $190. This was the fourth time this individual was cited for the violation.
Two younger brothers, aged 11 and 14 were observed snagging in the area. Their mother, Richanna Rio, who was nearby, was issued a citation for $110 for allowing her children to snag. Their poles were confiscated as well.
22-year-old Hunter Nash of Virginia, 23-year-old Zachary Gray of Juneau, and 59-year-old Alexander Galinato of Juneau were also seen attempting to snag at the location. Each was issued a citation for $110 and their poles were seized.
50-year-old Alexander Faatoai, and a 17 -year-old juvenile both of Juneau, were cited for retaining Coho salmon fro the area and cited for $130.
All of the persons charged have 30 days to respond to their citations.
