CAMP DENALI, Alaska –The Alaska Army National Guard is currently responding to a request for assistance to support local first responders at an apartment complex fire in downtown Juneau.
The incident commander has made a formal request for five Alaska National Guardsmen to assist with perimeter security at the Gastineau Apartments complex.
Initial reports indicate the complex has flames shooting from the top of the building in downtown Juneau and there is concern that the fire may spread. The National Guard is also prepping to respond to any additional requirements.

First responders have conducted a precautionary evacuation for a couple of blocks around the building and the National Guard members will help to secure the perimeter. The Juneau city emergency manager has also reportedly opened Centennial Hall as a shelter for fire evacuees and he has put a call into the Sitka Fire Department in the event this becomes an extended event.
The National Guard is the first military responder in all domestic emergencies.
