Ambler Man Arrested on Assault and Weapons Charges after Early Morning Weapons Incident

rural trooperEarly Thursday morning Alaska State Troopers based in Kotzebue received an assault report from the community of Amber, the trooper dispatch revealed on Sunday.

Troopers were called and informed of an assault involving weapons at 12:30 am on Thursday morning. After an investigation that revealed that 27-year-old Woodrow A. Griest of Ambler, while intoxicated, discharged a firearm at a gathering in Ambler during the early morning hours, then “announced he could kill everyone and then kill himself,” and arrest warrant was applied for.

Troopers traveled to the community of about 250 people on the Kobuk River, and with the assistance of the Ambler Village Police Officer, they placed Griest under arrest at a local residence without incident at 1:30 pm on Thursday. Griest was transported to Kotzebue, where he was remanded to the Kotzebue Regional Jail and held for arraignment on charges of Assault III x3, and Misconduct Involving Weapons.
