Two hours after Russia reported detecting a dual missile launch in the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, Israel announced that a joint missile test between the United States and Israel had taken place.
It was announced by the Iraeli Defense Ministry that they had launched a medium-range Sparrow missile from an Israeli aircraft that was intecepted and shot down by the Israeli defense anti-missile Arrow system.
According to Russia, the missile was fired from the Mediterranean eastward in the general direction of Syria. Russia called the launch irresponsible, saying, “If Israel chose to act so totally irresponsibly, the United States should have at least used the hotline between Washington and the Kremlin to warn Moscow of such tests despite the current coldness in the relations between the two countries.” It is unknown if any such call was made prior to the test.
That country’s defense Ministry said of the test that occurred as tensions are rising in the region with expectations of an airstrike by western forces, “All elements of the system performed according to their operational configuration.”
Oil futures rose quickly with the news of the missile detection with the market reacting with a 1.2 increase. That price settled back down to $114.90 before rising slightly to $115.14.
Western naval forces have been gathering in the eastern Mediterranen and the Red Sea in preparation of a reprisal strike against Syria for it alleged chemical weapons attack on the suburbs of Damascus on August 21st. That strike has been postponed until the U.S. Congress can meet and come to an agreement as to whether the U.S. should respond militarily to the incident.
