An Anchorage hiker, 29-year-old John Carlos Mann, took off on a hiking trip on the Crow Pass Trail on Friday but didn’t arrive at his intended location at Girdwood on Saturday as planned.

When Mann didn’t arrive at Girdwood at noon as planned on Saturday, his friends became concerned about his whereabouts. At 6:28 pm, Mann was reported overdue to the Alaska State Troopers in Girdwood.

Mann was reported to be wearing a black jacket, grey pants, and a white hat. It was also related to troopers that the missing person had a sleeping bag, tarp, food and water, and was dressed for the weather.

On Saturday several of Mann’s friends took to the field and hiked the Crow Pass trail from Girdwood to Clear Creek. They saw no sign of their missing friend. Those searchers came out of the field just after nightfall on Saturday.

Alaska State troopers Helo 3 was requested and was scheduled to respond to begin searching the area at daylight on Monday.

But, the hiker would turn up at approximately 10:30 pm at the Bird Ridge Motel near mile 101 of the Seward Highway.

Mann reported that he had become disoriented while hiking on Friday night. He stated that he had made “a wrong turn and descended a glacier before following the Bird Creek drainage for roughly 2 days until arriving at the Seward Highway.”

After being evaluated by EMS, and found to be cold and tired but otherwise unharmed, Mann was released from the scene and transported back to Anchorage by friends.
