Alaska State Troopers responded to an accident involving a snow machine on the Big Lake Ice Road late Sunday night at 11:41 pm. The caller reported serious injuries at the scene.
When troopers arrived on the scene, EMS was already there and preforming CPR on the driver of a side-by-side snow machine. The CPR efforts on the unconscious 54-year-old man were unsuccessful however, and after conferring with the emergency room doctor at a local hospital, EMS declared Anchorage resident William Hunsuck dead at the scene.
The Alaska Bureau of Highway Patrol took charge of the incident and their investigation of the incident would find that Hunsuck was operating the snow machine at a high rate of speed on the ice road, when he went over a berm, at which time the machine went out of control. It was reported that the machine started to roll or flip over when Hunsuck was ejected from the machine. Although the machine was equipped with seat belts, Hunsuck was not wearing one at the time of the accident. It was reported that Hunsuck was wearing a safety helmet.
Hunsuck’s son-in-law was present at the scene and was notified of Hunsuck’s passing.
The investigation into the accident is on-going.
