San Francisco International Airport was the scene of an airlines crash today as an Asiana Airlines flight from Seoul, South Korea broke apart on landing at 11:26 San Francisco time.
The plane, Asiana Airlines Flight 214, appeared to be coming in too low and the pilot tried to pull it up in the last minute according to witnesses. The hard landing caused the tail section to part from the rest of the aircraft, a huge fireball erupted as the aircraft spun on the airstrip. Later reports say that the aircraft’s tail section may have hit the seawall.

Slides were deployed and the Boeing 777’s and 292 passengers and 16 crewmembers exited the burning aircraft.
According to reports, one person was transported to the hospital by Coast Guard personnel according to USCG. Other sources say as many as 48 passengers received medical care. The spokesperson for San Francisco General Hospital stated that ten passengers in critical condition were admitted there. Two people have been reported as killed thus far.
The crash closed closed the SF International Airport and flights were diverted to other airports.
NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman and a National Transportation Safety Board team headed to the scene to investigate the crash.
