ANCHORAGE, ALASKA-Prompted by public outcry, the prosecutors in the case of Chidiebere Nwokorie, the Yellow Cab driver accused of raping a woman who he picked up while she was walking to downtown Anchorage, are seeking to raise his bail amount.
Nwokorie, 43, was released on a $5,000 bail, with no third party custodian, shortly after the incident on August 21st. District Attorney Brittany Dunlop is seeking to change those original bail conditions to a $50,000 bail with a third party custodian.
In a memo, Dunlop wrote,”Since the setting of bail in this case, the District Attorney’s Office and Standing Together Against Rape have received numerous calls from concerned citizens, some of whom use taxi cabs in Anchorage regularly and have expressed their fear and outrage over the low setting of bail, with no conditions that restrict the defendant’s contact with the public.”
Dunlop stated Monday, that Nwokorie has a hearing scheduled for Wednesday, but she is unsure if bail will be discussed at that time or if the court will hold a separate bail hearing later in the day.
Nwokorie faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
