When they went to the Vanderlinden household, they found the door ajar. When they entered the residence, they found the mother and two young boys, age four and seven brutally stabbed to death. Each was stabbed through the chest while in their rooms.
Police Captain Gregory Laurain said that there were no signs of forced entry and no sign of robbery. He also stated that no note was found at the scene either.
The woman found at the home was described by the authorities as a stay at home mom. The man, who was killed in the crash on I-94 at 1:04 am. was said to be employed in the information technology field.
The accident that occurred on I-94, just across the border near Michigan City Indiana, happened as Vanderlinden exited via the entrance ramp to a highway rest stop. It was there that he met 45-year-old Juan Nelson’s vehicle head-on. Officers say that the vehicles were traveling at high speed when the accident occurred.
Authorities descibed the scene of the crash as very violent, the bodies of both drivers were pinned in their vehicles. Members of the Springfield Fire Department extricated them from the vehicles and say the bodies were burned beyond recognition.
