KILLEEN, TEXAS-A soldier AWOL from Fort Campbell, Kentucky was arrested in a Killen, Texas hotel room on Wednesday with bomb making materials and faces federal charges that may be leveled at him as early as today.
Jason Abdo Nasser went AWOL from Fort Campbell, Kentucky on July 4th. Prior to that time, Nassar had filed for discharge as a conscientious objector on grounds of his Islamic faith. He would receive approval of his request, but was soon found in possession of child pornography and immediately went AWOL.
The Killeen police department received a phone call from a gun shop owner in Killeen reporting a suspicious man asking about 40 caliber ammunition, who then bought a magazine clip for a pistol and three boxes of shotgun shells. Nasser paid in cash and left in a cab. Investigations found that he then went to a surplus store and bought a military uniform.
When the suspect was contacted at his hotel room, FBI agents found gunpowder, shotgun shells, four magazines, ammunition, a pressure cooker and 18 pounds of sugar.
The Fort Hood website acknowledged the arrest in Killeen, but said Nasser and the arrest were in no way connected to the base. Fort Hood officials issued a statement saying, “We are aware at this time that Killeen Police Department arrested a Soldier yesterday. The incident leading to the arrest did not occur on Fort Hood and the Soldier was not a Fort Hood based Soldier.” Fort Hood was the location of the deadly 2009 shooting by an Army Psychiatrist.
