Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, former mosque preacher and teacher-turned spokesman for al Qaeda, who worked alongside Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri was arraigned in New York Court on Friday.
Ghaith, the son-in-law of Osama Bin Laden, is charged with one count of Conspiracy to Kill Americans in Federal Court. He appeared before Judge Lewis Kaplan and submitted his “Not Guilty” plea through his lawyer. He did not speak during his 20-minute arraignment. Federal prosecutors requested continued custody, the defense did not challenge the request.
The indictment against Ghaith stated, “Among other things, Abu Ghaith urged others to swear allegiance to Bin Laden, spoke on behalf of and in support of Al Qaeda’s mission, and warned that attacks similar to those of Sept. 11, 2001 would continue.”

Ghaith was captured in Jordon earlier in the week. According to a Turkish newspaper, Ghaith was seized in a luxury hotel in Ankara last month and a decision was made in Turkey to deport him to his home country of Kuwait. U.S. officials requested that Ghaith be detained there, but since he committed no crime on Turkish soil, Ghaith was released and placed on a plane. Jordanian officials picked up and arrested him while on a stop-over in Jordan on his way to Kuwait. Jordanian officials turned Ghaith over to U.S. authorities and he was extradited to the U.S. and placed in a New York jail.
Stories and leads placed Ghaith all over the world for the last decade, but as it turned out, Ghaith has been in Iran for the past ten years. He was there on a restricted status of sorts, some sources say house arrest.
In the aftermath of the tragedy of 9-11, Ghaith would appear alongside Bin Laden and al-Zawahri calling for the nation of Islam to rise up and kill christians,Jews and Americans, telling America a “great army is gathering against you.” He would warn muslims to stay out of high-rises and airplanes to avoid the “airplane storm.”
Kuwait took away his Kuwaiti citizenship after 9-11.
It was later in 2002, as the search went on for Bin Laden, that Ghaith was smuggled from Afghanistan to Iran.
Republican Senators that include Sen Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte have voiced that President Obama was wrong to bring Ghaith to New York to stand trial and feel that he should be imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay instead, where he can be questioned extensively instead of being protected from harsh interrogation by our justice system.
Michigan Representative Mike Rogers, said in a statement that he felt as an enemy combatant, Ghaith should be treated as the enemy and detained in Cuba to face a military tribunal rather than be under the U.S. court system.
