Anchorage police arrested a man in a bizarre broad daylight sexual assault in downtown Anchorage Tuesday.
42-year-old Earl Vrooman was arrested after a police officer was stopped and the act reported downtown at the Town Square.
Police reports say that Vrooman was assaulting a drugged, 22-year-old woman on a park bench on the northeast side of the park. The police officer said that the woman had her eyes open but was unresponsive.
According to reports, Vrooman told the officer that he had met the woman earlier in the day and that the woman said she was willing to have sex with him if he could get her some “Spice.” It was then that they walked to the park, where Vrooman said one of his friends gave him some of the synthetic marijuana.
After smoking a half of the marijuana cigarette, the woman wasn’t doing well, Vrooman said. Apparently the woman lost conscious and Vrooman put his hands down her pants and began fondling her. According to reports, that was when two men noticed what he was doing and beat him up.

After the men left, Vrooman continued to molest the unconscious woman. Vrooman was having intercourse with the woman when the police officer came on the scene.
According to the charging report, Vrooman admitted to the officer that the woman had said that she was “half-dead” during the assault. Vrooman admits that the woman didn’t give him permission to have sex. The detective in the case wrote in the report, that Vrooman asked him if the woman had died and said, “She wasn’t dead when I was having sex with her!”
The woman was taken to the Alaska Native Medical Center, where afterward she told officers that she knew what was happening, but was unable to move or speak during the time that Vrooman was assaulting her.
According to witnesses in the case, the woman was not drinking or taking any other drugs and had only smoked the synthetic marijuana.
Vrooman was charged with Sexual Assault in the Second Degree and remanded on $15,000 bail.
Vrooman was convicted in another case of Sexual Assault in 2001.
