Juneau-based Alaska State Troopers have opened an investigation into the deaths of two boaters found dead in the vicinity of Horse Island in Southeast Alaska on Saturday.
Saturday morning, at 11:45 am, troopers received notification of a dead body found on an Admiralty Island beach near Horse Island. When State and Wildlife Troopers responded to the scene, they were able to identify the remains as those of Sundown Arasmith, age 40.
As the investigation at the scene was in progress, another report came in reporting the discovery of another body, this one on a northern beach on Horse Island. Troopers responded to that scene and were able to identify those remains as those of Arnold Jongsma, age 60.
Troopers report that ” Further investigation revealed Arasmith and Jongsma left Lena Point on Friday, 02/12/2016, with the intent to boat to Shelter Island.” Shelter Island is directly across the water from Lena Point in northern Juneau, but the boaters were located about 10 miles south of there destination near and on Horse Island.
Next of kin were notified and the two boater’s remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsy. Troopers do not believe foul play played a part in the two men’s deaths.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
