GAMBELL, Alaska-Yesterday afternoon, at about 3:10 pm, the Alaska State Troopers were notified that the body of Stanley Rookok had been found. Troopers will respond to t the village of Gambell today to conduct an investigation into his death. It is unclear where his body was found.

Rookok, 34, was last seen on December 15th at around 2:30 in the afternoon. When last seen, he was going out to get drinking water at a water source near Gambell. It was reported that he was not dressed for inclement weather. Shortly after departing, the weather worsened and blizzard conditions moved into the area.

The trip to drinking water was to take about fifteen minutes. When he hadn’t returned four hours later, his wife/girlfriend reported him overdue.

Searches for him were initiated by locals of Gambell, but weather conditions hampered the search. Conditions remained poor throughout the week. In the poor conditions, signs of Rookok and/or his ATV could not be found.

Rookok, a resident of Savoonga, another village on Saint Lawrence island, was visiting in Gambell when the incident occurred.
