Out again on Maya's Westside Charters, we headed north to meet up with L pod whales who were coming down Haro Strait. L pod whales were spread all over, it was difficult to tell who was present, but I did get a quick pic of Onyx L-87 and Mega L-41.That was very cool, since Onyx travels with J pod all the time and Mega is one of his closer relatives – having a visit!
J pod had already come south and was evidently waiting for L pod whales to show up down by the lighthouse. After getting off the boat, I went south to see if the whales were still around, or if they had continued on down island, 4 hours later I was still there!
I sat in amazement, it doesn’t happen like this all the time, it was simply amazing.
Js and Ls had met up and were having a grand time, they were in the kelp and they were spread from Lime Kiln down to about Edwards Pt. from in shore – like on the rocks – to off shore, they were going every which way and surprising us with surfacings.
They continued with their back and forth, socializing and hopefully salmon eating…they were right where they want to be, at least for a while.
After a while, it looked as if they were going north, everyone had gone past and so, I went home to wait for them. But, they didn’t show up! I went back to the park to see if I can find where they went – nowhere! They had turned, and I made it just in time, as they were coming back south in the glare of the sun. So, now I was intent on figuring out who was going which way…or at least who was there!
I saw all of J pod, but , of course not Riptide J-30 – so sad at his loss. Nugget L-55, Ophelia L-27, Surprise L-86 and their offspring had gone down island.
Mega L-41, Mystery L-85 were traveling with Ocean Sun L-25, Spirit L-22 and her boys – Skana L-79 and Solstice L-89. Calypso L-94 and Cousteau L-113 had all gone south. I didn’t see Matia and the baby at this point, but since I had seen them earlier, I believe they were just fine and just out of my view.
I saw Marina L-47, Mystic L-115, and Muncher L-91, then Lulu L-53 and Nigel L-95, and then, I saw Fluke L-105 traveling up island with Granny and her group.
I had seen Granny J-2, Spieden J-8 and the J14s heading north a while before, but with all the direction changes and the lateness of the day, I didn’t know where they were.
At 7:40 pm, Onyx L-87 was passing by, going down island. Another male was coming up towards him, the others that had gone back down hadn’t gotten very far. about 10 minutes after he went south, Onyx came back north- most of the whales had come back down island.
I noticed 4 or 5 heading back south, but they were still at the ‘wall’ at the park, though not in really close, then one of them made a big spyhop, a few minutes later another big spyhop from that same group.
Then, all the Js began heading north, and this time they had committed to a direction, and they moved off very fast!
