ANCHORAGE, ALASKA-The Anchorage Police Department has announced that they have charged a Yellow Cab driver, Chidiebere Nwokrie, age 43 for charges of first-degree sexual assault and attempted sexual assault, as well as second-degree sexual assault. The charges originate from an incident phoned in to the police yesterday, Sunday August 21st.
At about 2:30 yesterday afternoon, Bradly Orr, who was on his way home from a shooting range, was waved down in the Ship Avenue area, where he keeps a storage unit. The frightened woman who flagged him down while holding her pants in her hand, told him that she had just been assaulted by a cab driver for the Yellow Cab company.
Orr immediately called the police. While waiting for their arrival, the cab driver accused of the assault pulled up, exited his vehicle and approached Orr and the woman. Orr reached into the back of his vehicle and retrieved a pistol which he used to keep the cab driver in place until the police arrived.
The woman told detectives that she was on her way into the downtown area to buy a new battery for her cell phone when the cab driver pulled up and offered her a ride. Nwokorie then proceeded instead to the cab company’s service lot, where he assaulted her.
Police arrived and arrested Nwokorie. He was freed later in the afternoon after posting bail in the amount of $5,000.
Police detectives are concerned that because Nwokorie has regular access to women who travel alone, that there may be more victims that have yet to be come forward. They ask that anyone with more information contact the department at 786-8900.
