TRAPPER CREEK-A mid-air collision above Amber Lake, approximately 12 miles southwest of Trapper Creek, at 2:14pm yesterday claimed the lives of all aboard a Cessna 180 as it crashed and burned according to Meg Peters, Alaska State Troopers spokesperson.
SKWENTNA- A 5.3 magnitude earthquake woke many residents of South Central Alaska this morning. The quake occurred at 6 am approximately 12 miles north of the small community, and 78 miles northwest of Anchorage, Alaska's central hub. The occurrence was 50.7 miles deep.
HOMER-At Monday's City Council meeting, the city of Homer voted to officially opt out of the automatically activated Tsunami Warning System. Currently, Homer is the only community that has done so, but Seward, Kenai, and Seldovia are considering making the same move.
The United States Postal Service, this week released a list of 3,653 post offices that could be closed, and some of their services handed off to local businesses, while other services would be relegated to on-line applications. Of those 3,653 post offices on the list, 36 of them were located in remote villages in Alaska.
